Bugsy is Home! 01/18/2010
I thought he had Immune Mediated Gingivitis... What he has is actually quite worst - Lymphocytic Plasmacytic Stomatits. It affects his whole mouth and throat... It is also quite advanced - on a 0 to 3 scale, he scored 2.3. Not only that, but he also had several root exposures, Resorptive lesions, and Periodontal Disease Stage 4. He will need multiple dental extractions once his gingival tissues heals. They couldn't do now as it would be too painful for him to bear. He was given local shots of an antibiotic (Perimino TAA) and depo-medrol, as well as had a dental cleaning, polishing, and desensitization, as well as Ora5 Chemical periodontal disease treatment. His meds contains antibiotics. He will need to go back in 30 days, then in 3 months - depending on how he is, plans will be made to extract his teeth. They think he will need at least 6 months of daily treatment before his gums are ok to withstand surgery/dental removal - for now they are so inflamed that the healing would be extremely painful. The good news is that they said I should start seeing a difference on him in about a week or so! As far as the anesthesia, he did great, and came right back up when it was over... They didn't give him too much though, as they noticed right away his gums were way too inflamed to deal with surgery. He is up right now, and there has been no hissing here... He didn't want to eat wet food - went straight to his dry food... go figure ... Thank goodness his dry food is super soft and it melts away very easily! I will keep you all posted - I think this will be interesting, since it is such a new treatment! CommentsMon, 18 Jan 2010 6:27:53 pm Fiona has gum disease too. Stomatits, lesions, etc. She had to have her teeth and gums cleaned. She is on 2 months of meds, teeth brushing starts next week, she ahs special liquid for her drinking water, and a mouth rinse that starts next week too. Her prognosis is not good, if this does not work and they don't think it will she will have to have most of her teeth removed. Not fun! We will keep Bugsy in our thoughts and prayers. Keep us posted. Mon, 18 Jan 2010 7:13:32 pm That is good that he came right out of the anesthesia. WE are sorry his condition was so much worse! WE hope he takes his meds and improves. Tue, 19 Jan 2010 9:05:41 am I'm glad Bugsy is home and on the mend. At the local shelter here, there have been a couple of cats with stomatitis who had all of their teeth removed, and did very well! Tue, 19 Jan 2010 12:27:43 pm I am so glad that Bugsy is home and came through the surgery so well, but it is so sad to hear that he is worse then expected. We are sending him lots of healing purrs and prayers, and hope that the medicine helps him to get well enough to do the surgery quickly, so he doesn't have to go through so much pain for a long time - 6 months sounds like forever! We hope he is better faster then that (though we know it will be a long process, we can always hope right!) I am amazed he went for his dry food - Kirzon had his cleaning and only went for the canned for the first day or so - but he was obviously hungry - just didn't want to try the crunchy stuff I guess. That Bugsy is one tough cookie! Your comment will be posted after it is approved. Leave a Reply |
